On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech at the State Department luncheon, in which she praised Australia for their strict gun control laws and declared that America should be more like them in that department.
For reference, Australian citizens do not have a legal right to own a gun after a mass gun confiscation in the 90’s, in which the Australian government collected about 650,000 privately owned guns in a mandatory gun buyback. In addition, the country established a gun registry and banned Remi-automatic files as well as pump action shotguns.
Australians are now only able to buy a gun if they apply and the government deems it a “genuine reason,” such as sport or hunting.

“As we gather details, we must continue to speak truth about the moment we are in,” Harris said following the mass shooting in Maine on Wednesday that left at least 18 dead and dozens injured. “In our country today, the leading cause of death of American children is gun violence. Gun violence has terrorized and traumatized so many of our communities in the United States.”
“And let us be clear, it does not have to be this way — as our friends in Australia have demonstrated,” she continued.

It wasn’t the gun in the recent Maine shootings, it was the person that owned the gun, he was mentally ill and no one appeared to notice that he owned a gun.
